Jeff Bussgang
KEYNOTE

Jeff is a General Partner at Flybridge Capital Partners whose investment interests and entrepreneurial experience are in consumer, Internet commerce, marketing services, software and wireless start-ups.

Jeff currently represents the firm on the boards of BzzAgent, ClickSquared, DataXu, digitalArbor,i4cp, Mall Networks, oneforty, Ready Financial,  SimpleTuition, and Transpera and was previously a director at Brontes Technologies (acquired by 3M), go2Media, and PanGo Networks (merged with InnerWireless).

Jeff was recently appointed to serve as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Harvard Business School’s Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship.  He is also on the board of MITX, the Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange and is a Founding Executive Committee Member of FirstGrowth Venture Network, a network of venture and angel investors supporting first and second time entrepreneurs building exciting companies in the New York area.

Background
Prior to joining the firm in January 2003, Jeff co-founded Upromise (acquired by Sallie Mae), a loyalty marketing and financial services firm with 11 million members that currently manages $20 billion in college savings assets, where he served as President, Chief Operating Officer and Board Director. Prior to Upromise, Jeff was an executive at Open Market, an Internet commerce software leader that went public in 1996 and grew to nearly $100 million in revenues. During his five-year tenure, he served as Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Business Development, Vice President of Worldwide Professional Services and head of Product Management. Prior to Open Market, Jeff was with the strategy consulting firm, The Boston Consulting Group, and served on the executive team of Athena Design, an object-oriented software start-up.

Education
Jeff holds a BA in Computer Science from Harvard University where he graduated magna cum laude and an MBA from Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar and a Ford Scholar.
 
Interests
Jeff is married with three children and is an avid baseball fan. He is an active community member, serving as co-chair of the Progressive Business Leaders Network, vice chairman of the board of educational non-profit, Facing History and Ourselves, and was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick to the Readiness Finance Commission to make funding recommendations for education reform.  Jeff is the author of "Ruling The Net", a 1996 Harvard Business Review article predicting the development of Internet commerce.





Charlie Baker

KEYNOTE

Charlie Baker has spent his career bringing success and strong management to both the private and public sectors in Massachusetts. Raised in Needham, Massachusetts as the oldest of three sons, Charlie graduated from Needham High School in 1975 as an All-League basketball player. He attended Harvard College, lettering in varsity basketball and graduating with a degree in English in 1979. Over the following five years, Charlie worked as Media Relations Director for the New England Council, and then as Corporate Communications Director for the Massachusetts High Technology Council. He decided to return to school in 1984 and earned an MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in 1986.

In 1988, Baker helped start the Pioneer Institute for Public Policy Research, an independent, nonpartisan state think tank. Baker left Pioneer in January, 1991 to join the newly elected Weld/Cellucci Administration as Undersecretary for Health in the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. As Undersecretary, Charlie played pivotal roles in Medicaid reform, facility consolidation, and the expansion of a number of key public health programs. He became Secretary of Health and Human Services in the fall of 1992, and led the Administration’s efforts to enact welfare reform.

Baker became Secretary of Administration and Finance in the fall of 1994, and served in that position until September of 1998. He re-structured and simplified the state’s purchasing system, led a major effort to improve the state’s capacity to collect third party revenue, and oversaw the largest effort ever to modernize the state’s code of regulation. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Governor’s Association in 1998.

Baker became CEO of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (HVMA) in the fall of 1998, and was soon recruited by Harvard Vanguard’s parent – Harvard Pilgrim Health Care – to serve as its CEO in May, 1999. Baker led a major turnaround at HPHC, which included a $220 million year-to-year improvement in financial performance from 1999 to 2000, and the amicable separation of HPHC and HVMA. Under Baker's tenure, HPHC went on to become the highest ranked health plan in the country for member satisfaction and clinical effectiveness for five years running, and was named a Boston Business Journal "Best Places To Work" for seven straight years.

Andrea Auerbach

MODERATOR
Managing Director, Cambridge Associates LLC


Andrea is a Managing Director at Cambridge Associates and currently head of the firm’s U.S. private equity research practice, which covers U.S. buyout, growth equity, mezzanine, and distressed strategies, markets and managers. For five years prior to that, she was head of the firm’s international private equity and venture capital research practice. She has been with Cambridge since 2001.

Prior to joining Cambridge Associates in 2001, Andrea was a Senior Director at Prudential Private Equity. Over the course of her eight years with Prudential, Andrea invested and managed over $1 billion of capital in U.S. buyouts, venture capital, real estate, and European mezzanine and private equity. She also led early efforts to benchmark Prudential’s $5 billion buyout portfolio, and domestic and European fund investment portfolios.
   
Andrea graduated from Smith College and received an MBA from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, where she received first year honors.




David Belluck

General Partner, Riverside Partners


David Belluck is a General Partner with Riverside Partners, a Boston-based, private equity investment firm.  Riverside Partners invests in growing, middle market businesses in the technology and health care industries.  The firm is currently investing Riverside Fund IV, L.P., a $406 million equity fund raised in 2009.  Riverside Partners’ investors include leading endowments, foundations, pension funds, family offices and fund of funds.  David joined Riverside Partners in 1988 and has been leading the firm for the past ten years.

David is a Director of the following companies:  Tegra Medical, Healthdrive, Alteris Renewables, NDS Surgical Imaging, Quantum Medical Imaging and Sixnet.  Prior to Riverside Partners, he was a consultant with Monitor Company, a strategy consulting firm. 

David serves on the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors in Massachusetts.  He is a Board Member of the Progressive Business Leaders Network, and co chairs the Finance Committee.  He is also a Director and the Vice Chairman of the Board of the Kingsley Montessori School, and serves on the Executive Committee and as Chair of the school’s Capital Campaign.

David received his MBA with honors from Harvard Business School in 1988.  He graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in economics in 1984. 




John DeSisto

Director of Non-Marketable Strategies, Boston University Investment Office



John DeSisto is the Director of Non-Marketable Strategies for the Boston University Investment Office.  He was previously the Sr. Manager at Alcatel-Lucent Investment Management Corporation, where he helped manage the pension's $2.5 billion private equity portfolio.  Prior to Alcatel-Lucent Investment Management Corporation, John was a Director at BancBoston Capital managing the firm's private equity fund of funds.  John has a BS in finance from Georgetown University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.



John McCormick
PANELIST
Managing Director, Monument Group, Inc.


Mr. McCormick joined Monument Group in 2006 from Cambridge Associates where he was a specialist consultant advising foundations, families, universities and non-profit organizations on the non-marketable alternative asset portfolios of their endowments. Prior to Cambridge Associates, John was a vice president at BancBoston Capital/BancBoston Ventures.  During his tenure John was responsible for investments ranging from primary and secondary fund investments to direct investments in both early stage venture and middle market buyout opportunities.  These investments were made in a variety of sectors including biotechnology, healthcare services, information technology, telecommunications, restaurants and manufacturing John also worked as an investment banking analyst in Lehman Brothers' Mergers and Acquisitions Group focusing on retail and consumer products.  He is a graduate of Williams College and received his MBA from The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.





Julie Ocko

Managing Director, HarbourVest Partners, LLC




Julie Ocko joined HarbourVest’s primary partnership team in 2001.  She focuses on U.S. venture, buyout, and credit-related partnership investments.  Julie serves on the advisory boards of funds managed by Alta Communications, Berkshire Partners, Capital Resource Partners, Code Hennessy & Simmons, Falcon Investment Advisors, Francisco Partners, J.W. Childs, Spire Capital Management, Third Rock Ventures, and Thoma Bravo.  Prior to joining the Firm, she spent ten years with AEW Capital Management, a real estate investment adviser.  As a principal in the Capital Markets Group, she managed financing and disposition transactions for AEW’s investment portfolio.  Julie also worked for Narragansett Capital, a buyout firm.  She received a BS in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina in 1982 and an MBA from the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in 1987.

Elise Zoli
MODERATOR

Areas of Practice
Elise Zoli chairs the firm’s Energy Practice, is a leader in its Cleantech and Climate Change initiatives, and focuses on the clean energy, Cleantech and innovative nuclear sectors.

Work for Clients
Ms. Zoli specializes in developing the strategic direction, including venture capital investment, private equity, project finance and alternative funding, for Cleantech companies and projects. Her work includes substantial depth in energy storage (batteries and beyond), ground source and geothermal, innovative nuclear, biofuels, clean water and water treatment, industrial processes, carbon conversion, wind and solar, automotive, ocean wave technologies and wireless electricity, as well as carbon markets. Recent examples of her work include efforts on behalf of recognized leaders in the innovative nuclear, carbon conversion, advanced biofuels and electroplating space, with funding of these initiatives under various Department of Energy programs. Ms. Zoli works on behalf of the Cleantech sector primarily from the Boston and Silicon Valley offices. She is also a lecturer on Cleantech and Climate Change at MIT’s Sloan School, and regularly speaks on Cleantech issues nationwide.

In addition, Ms. Zoli has broad experience in the transfer, permitting and development of energy projects, particularly electric-generating, biofuel and energy storage facilities. Recent examples of her work include strategic development and acquisition advice, compliance counseling and litigation services on behalf of nuclear-powered, fossil-fuel and wind-turbine electric-generating stations, as well as strategic counseling for a leading "Green tag" provider. In conjunction with her transactional work, Ms. Zoli also has pioneered the use of insurance coverage. Her work includes implementation of the nationally recognized Commonwealth-subsidized environmental-insurance program developed in conjunction with the Massachusetts Brownfields legislation.

Ms. Zoli has considerable experience in environmental and energy-related litigation under the major federal environmental acts. Recent examples of her work include the strategic defense of power-production and infrastructure facilities facing scrutiny under the National Environmental Policy Act and comparable state law. Recent successes (in 2009) include Entergy v. Riverkeeper, in which the U. S. Supreme Court approved the use of cost-benefit analysis in the development of federal water-use regulations, and Entergy v. Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, in which the Massachusetts judiciary rejected the Massachusetts DEP’s regulatory overreach with respect to water use.

Ms. Zoli is a lecturer on Cleantech and Climate Change at MIT’s Sloan School, regularly speaks on Cleantech issue nationwide and is an advisor to ecoIDEA.

Wael Almazeedi

CEO, QGEN Ltd.  



Mr. Almazeedi is Founder and Chairman of QGEN.  He is also Managing Partner of BTU Power, a private equity firm with a track record in developing, managing and owning 11,000 MW (gross) of installed power generation capacity located in China, South Korea, Taiwan, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates.  Prior to QGEN and BTU Power, Mr. Almazeedi’s worked for the World Bank Group and for the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation.

Mr. Almazeedi holds a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (USA), a post-graduate diploma from the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UK) and a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Chemistry with Control Engineering from the University of Kent at Canterbury (UK). 

In 2006, Mr. Almazeedi was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year® Award in the energy category for New England.




David Anthony

David Anthony is an experienced entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and educator. Since founding 21Ventures in 2004, the firm has provided seed, growth, and bridge capital to over 40 technology ventures across the globe focusing mainly in the cleantech arena. David Anthony sits on the board of a number of 21V portfolio companies including (partial list) Advanced Telemetry; BioPetroClean, ETV Motors, and Variable Wind Solutions. David also serves on the board of directors of publicly traded companies Axion Power International, Inc. (OTC: AXPW); Clean Power Technologies Inc. (OTC: CPWE) Solar EnerTech Corp. (OTC: ENSL), Energy Focus, Inc.(NASDAQ: EFOI) and ThermoEnergy Corporation (OTC: TMEN).
 
David Anthony is an Adjunct Professor at the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS). The Academy, based in Manhattan brings together scientists of different disciplines from around the world to advance the understanding of science, technology, and medicine, and to stimulate new ways to think about how their research is applied in society and the world. The Academy is widely recognized as one of the world's foremost organizers of scientific conferences and symposia. David's students at the Academy hail from such prestigious institutions as Columbia, NYU, Princeton, Yale, Rockefeller University, Sloan Kettering, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
 
Previously, Mr. Anthony collaborated with Dartmouth College professor Dr. John K. Shank and consulted for Fortune 500 clients on capital investments, mergers and acquisitions, and entrepreneurship. In addition David is an adjunct professor at the NYU Stern School of business where he began teaching technology entrepreneurship in the Fall of 2009.
 
David received his MBA from The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1989 and a BA in economics from George Washington University in 1982. He is an entrepreneurship mentor at the Land Center for Entrepreneurship at Columbia University Graduate School of Business. In 2002, David was awarded the Distinguished Mentor of the Year Award from Columbia University.

Steven Taub

Vice President, Investment Strategy, GE Energy Financial Services


Steven Taub is Senior Vice President, Investment Strategy at GE Energy Financial Services.  In this role he works closely with GE investment professionals to evaluate project finance and venture capital investment opportunities and to create and develop new ones.

Prior to joining GE, Mr. Taub was with Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), where he was engaged in research and strategic consulting on energy technology and electric power for a wide range of clients worldwide.  Mr. Taub also has worked for the U.S. Department of Energy office of Environmental Management and office of New Production Reactors.

Steve earned master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Technology and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University.  He also completed a U.S. DOE engineering training program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and class work in corporate finance at Harvard.



Carter Ward

Mr. Ward joined ArcLight in 2001 and has 15 years of energy finance and private equity experience. Prior to joining ArcLight, Mr. Ward was a Vice President at McManus & Miles, a boutique investment bank that specializes in financial advisory and private placement services for companies in the Power and Energy Industry. Mr. Ward earned a Bachelor of Science in Operations Research & Industrial Engineering from Cornell University.
